Reshare Sunday Times Magazine

Long before Eddie Bulatao was foraging for saltbush, pigface and Geraldton wax along WA’s coastline, he was selling hotcakes made from a recipe he’d pinched from a childhood friend in the Philippines. Not bad for a kid who started out cooking for pocket money. These days, the Perth chef is celebrating the incredible ingredients growing in our own backyard, sharing his passion for native produce and Indigenous food knowledge in his first cookbook, Gather. In this weekend’s , Bulatao chatted to Jade Jurewicz about his journey from Red Rooster to head chef of Aboriginal-owned Gather Foods, the underrated ingredients we should all be cooking with, and the little boy inspiring him to pass on everything he’s learnt. Read the full story in Sunday’s magazine.

A look back at Gather to Plate.

Earlier this year, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Aranmore Catholic College took part in an immersive program connecting culture, Country, hospitality and tourism.

Across four hands-on modules, students developed industry skills and explored pathways into Western Australia’s tourism and hospitality sectors.

A few moments from the journey.

Check out our very own Gerry Matera on ABC Breakfast News this morning, talking all things Manjaree.

Located in Walyalup (Fremantle), Manjaree will be an exciting new destination to celebrate and experience First Nations culture through food, art and immersive storytelling. A place that awakens the senses, deepens connection to Boodjar (Country) and creates new opportunities for Aboriginal people to share culture through tourism.

Earlier this year, the inaugural Gather to Plate program welcomed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Aranmore Catholic College for an immersive experience connecting to culture, Country, hospitality and tourism.

Designed to build entry-level skills, confidence and industry knowledge, the program gave year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to learn from Elders, develop entry-level skills and experience potential pathways into employment.

Delivered across four immersive modules:

Kuliny Wadjuk Boodja (Going on Wadjuk Country)
An On-Country cultural immersion focused on Nyoongar protocols, identity and connection to Boodja, building strength, belonging and cultural understanding.

Waangkiny (Learning)
Hands-on learning in kitchen operations, food safety and front-of-house service at the Gather Foods headquarters.

Wardanup Boodja (Ocean)
A full day exploring culturally led tourism, bush food knowledge with Elders and significant cultural sites, connecting students with Country and the stories held within it.

Ngaarniny (Eating)
Students put their skills into action by hosting a Bush Tucker Talks & Tastings showcase for invited guests.

Funded by Tourism Western Australia, Gather to Plate was developed to support greater participation of Aboriginal young people in Western Australia’s tourism and hospitality sectors, while building the skills and experience needed to explore future employment opportunities.

Through cultural learning and hands-on training, students gained a deeper connection to Country and culture while discovering the skills, opportunities and pathways available across the industry.

Thank you to the staff, students and parents of Aranmore Catholic College for their participation. We also extend our sincere thanks to our Cultural Facilitators and Elders for generously sharing their knowledge: Aunty Vivienne Hansen, Dr Leonard Collard, Rohan Collard, Bennell Collard and Jackson Jones.

Last Saturday, we gathered at 11 Acre Farm for the launch of Dusk. A dinner series celebrating the connection between seasonal produce, local chefs and the stories behind every ingredient.

Kicking off the series was our very own Executive Head Chef Eddie Bulatao and Fendi B**g from The Good Paddock.

A special thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening a success and to the team at 11 Acre Farm and The Good Paddock.

We look forward to gathering around the table again soon.
