The Kainamui factory serves about 1,800 smallholder coffee farmers who are members of the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society, about 600 of whom are women. The smallholders own an average of 200 trees on less than half a hectare of land.
Farmers in the area grow gravellea, macadamia nuts, eucalyptus, tea, corn, and bananas in addition to coffee.
The factory receives field visits from agricultural ministers and agro-companies who offer training programs. The F.C.S. also provides prefinancing for farmers to allow them to pay school fees, production costs, and in case of emergencies.

María Rosa Oidor runs family farm, Los Nogales (or ‘the walnut trees‘ in Spanish’), with her husband Alfonso Pillimué and their four children.
The farm is situated a thirty minute walk from the small town of San Antonio, where the couple also own a general store. Using the earnings generated by their shop, María Rosa and Alfonso saved the money needed to buy their two-hectare farm some twenty years ago.
Since then, Alfonso has remained in charge of the store, while María Rosa manages Los Nogales. During the harvest, María Rosa hikes up the mountain that leads to the family’s estate well before dawn, to check in on the crew of 15 or so pickers that assists the family every year and to organise the schedule for the day’s work.
She’s deeply respected by everyone she works with, as she’s just as likely to spend the morning preparing breakfast for her team and family, as she is to pick up a basket to help with the hand-selecting of coffee cherry.

The Profiler Blend – Fresh Crop Update (July)

We’re excited to welcome back our El Salvador component to The Profiler with the arrival of fresh crop Finca El Paraíso, a standout washed Bourbon lot sourced through the Aida Batlle Selection Program.

This coffee is produced by Claudia Mathies, a fourth-generation grower whose family has owned El Paraíso since the 1800s. With support from Aida Batlle, Claudia has brought this Café Practices–certified farm into the spotlight, not only for the quality of its coffee but also for its commitment to community — including regular on-site medical visits and seasonal celebrations for local families.
In the cup, El Paraíso brings rich chocolate and toffee, balanced with sweet date and a delicate orange-like acidity — the perfect complement to the creamy, chocolate-driven base of Fazenda Pântano.

Sourced through Cafebras, this latest release returns The Profiler to its classic form — smooth, sweet, and built for milk, with the complexity to shine on its own.

Available now online, in store, from our city store & partner cafes from this week.

Headed to espresso hoppers this week we have the return of fresh crop Karindundu. Located in the lowland region of Mt. Kenya, 1 km from the town of Karatina in Kenya’s Nyeri district.
There are a total of 513 active members (349 male, 164 female) contributing to annual production, each with an average of 300 trees and 0.5 acres. Farmers grow macadamia, banana, maize, and beans near their coffee. After harvesting their ripe cherries, farmers deliver them to Karindundu where they undergo a traditional washed process. Coffee is de-pulped, fermented overnight, washed, and then placed on raised beds where it dries to a stable level. Karindundu helps to support the contributing farmers by advising the use of farm manure, pruning, and applying fertilizer. They also maintain a demonstration plot where these methods can be seen and better understood.
Coffee in Kenya is typically traceable down to the factory, or mill level: Most farmers own between 1/8 to 1/4 of a hectare, and often grow crops other than coffee as well, which means they rely on a central processing unit for sale and processing of their coffee. Producers deliver in cherry form to a factory, where the cooperative will sort, weigh, and issue payment for the delivery. The coffee is then blended with the rest of the day’s deliveries and goes on to be processed. Because of this system, which serves many hundreds to several thoughts of smallholder farmers per factory, there is limited traceability down to the individual producers whose coffee comprises the lots.

Our last offering for the season from and roasted for espresso. This SL-34 Natural is the product of Emilio López and Jose Roberto Santamaría’s multigenerational coffee producing families. They have a deep connection with their land and together, they joined forced to create Odyssey Coffees, an El Salvador and Portland-based coffee company.

Emilio and Roberto acquired Finca Las Isabellas in 2007 and now focus on producing SL varieties, Pacamara, Pacas and Red Bourbon on the farm. They have an on-site wet mill, Tequendama mill where they process their own cherry and those of neighboring farms.
In order to support the producing communities near Finca Tequendama and Finca Las Isabellas, they created their project “Growing Together” in April 2021. They offered workshops for suppliers to help them increase their productivity and quality. They also offer medical assistance and educational programs for youth.
