After an incredible journey, we’ve made the difficult decision to close Big Five Food Truck.
We want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single customer who supported us over the years. Whether you visited us at markets, festivals, events, or simply followed us from stop to stop, you’ve been a huge part of our journey. We’ve loved serving you and creating so many wonderful memories along the way.
While it’s the end of one chapter, it’s not goodbye! You can still enjoy many of your favourite South African dishes at Saffron Safari, where we’ll continue serving the authentic flavours you’ve come to love.
We hope you’ll come and visit us, share a meal, and continue this journey with us.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your loyalty, encouragement, and support. We couldn’t have done it without you, and we look forward to welcoming you at Saffron Safari.
With gratitude,
Ian & Edith ❤️🇿🇦

BUNNY CHOWS & BOTTLES: A SOUTH AFRICAN WINE TASTING 🇿🇦
North Freo | Sunday, 29th March
We’re bringing a whole bunch of South African energy to Old Bridge Cellars for our quarterly wine tasting and food pairing extravaganza and it’s all about flavour.
South Africa is home to some of the oldest vineyards in the Southern Hemisphere, and right now it’s producing wines with serious energy. From historic Stellenbosch estates to the modern movement in Swartland, the country is turning out bright, textured whites (hello, Chenin), structured reds and wines with real personality and value. (Swipe for )
We’ll be showcasing a curated line-up of 12 South African wines over 4 stations that showcases exactly that. Come down and explore why these wines and history are so special and hot right now.
Alongside the tasting, we’re teaming up with Perth’s favourite Saffa cuisine on wheels, who’ll be serving authentic Bunny Chows: a South African street-food classic.
For the uninitiated, that’s a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with rich, spiced curry. Bold, comforting and unapologetically flavourful. Originating in Durban in the 1940’s to feed the Indian community which was the largest concentration in the world outside of India. Eaten with your hands and filled with bold flavours like garam masala, turmeric, cumin and coriander we can't wait to share. Bring on the bunnies!
Choose from:
- Mutton Bunny (classic)
- Chicken Bunny
- Bean Bunny (V)
Served with chilli and sambal, and all are ‘Aussie Hot’ which equates to mild.
The wine tasting runs between 12pm–3pm (final arrivals at 2.30pm), and the Bunny Chows are available as your lunch option before or after you explore the wines.
How to get involved…
It is essential to PRE-ORDER your Bunny Chow to secure the goods and the free wine tasting is included with your ticket.
Not hungry? Just come along for a SA wine tasting and soak up the atmosphere, you don't need to register to come along for that!
When | Sunday, 29th March, 12pm - 3pm
Where | Old Bridge North Freo
Pre-order | $28.00 Bunny Chow (Choose from: mutton, chicken or bean) + Tasting.
